Leviticus 8

God has Moses assemble the people

The Existing One continued telling Moses, “Take Aaron, his sons, the clothes, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, two rams, and a basket of flatbread and then gather the entire assembly at the entrance of the meeting tent.” So Moses did what the Existing One had asked and assembled everyone.

Moses prepares Aaron and his sons

Moses told the assembly, “This is what the Existing One ordered us to do.” Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. He put the coat on him, tied the sash around his waist, put the robe on him, and tied the ephod to him with the ephod’s woven band. He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece. He put the turban on his head and put the gold plate (the sacred crown) on the front of his turban just like the Existing One had instructed.

Moses anoints priests

Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, dedicating them. He sprinkled the altar with it seven times and then anointed the altar and all its utensils including the basin and the stand, consecrating them. He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him. Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and clothed them with coats, tied sashes around their waists, and put caps on them, just like the Existing One had instructed.

Moses sacrifices a bull for priests’ sins

Then he brought the bull for the sin offering and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. He killed it and Moses dipped his finger in its blood and spread it on the altar’s horns. He purified the altar and poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it to make amends for it. Then Moses took all the fat from its guts, the liver, and the kidneys with their fat, and burned them on the altar. He took the bull, its skin, its meat, and its feces and burned them outside of the camp just like the Existing One had instructed.

Moses sacrifices a ram as a food offering on priests’ behalf

Then he presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Then he killed it and Moses threw its blood against the sides of the altar. He cut the ram into pieces, and Moses burned its head, its fat, and its other pieces. Moses washed its guts and legs with water and then burned the whole ram on the altar. It was burnt offering: a food offering with a pleasant fragrance to the Existing One, just like the Existing One had instructed Moses.

Moses sacrifices a ram for priests’ ordination

Then he presented the other ram (the ram of ordination), and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Then he killed it and Moses took some of its blood and put it on Aaron’s right ear lobe, on Aaron’s right thumb, and on Aaron’s right big toe. Then he presented Aaron’s sons, and Moses put some of the blood on their right ear lobes, their right thumbs, and their right big toes. Then Moses threw the blood against the sides of the altar. Then he took the fat (including the tail fat, gut fat, liver, and kidneys) and the right thigh. He grabbed one flatbread, one loaf with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on top of the fat pieces and right thigh. He handed it all over to Aaron and his sons and waved them as a wave offering before the Existing One. Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering with a pleasant fragrance—a food offering to the Existing One. Moses took the breast and waved it for a wave offering for the Existing One. It was Moses’ portion of the ordination ram just like the Existing had instructed Moses.

Moses anoints priests with oil and blood

Then Moses took the anointing oil and the blood from the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and his sons and their garments, consecrating them.

Moses tells priests to wait 7 days for ordination to be complete

Moses told Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the meeting tent entrance and eat it there along with the bread in the ordination offerings basket, just like I ordered when I said, ‘Aaron and his sons should eat it.’ If there are any leftovers you should burn them with fire. Don’t leave the meeting tent’s foyer for 7 days until the ordination process is complete. (It will take 7 days to ordain you.) To make amends for you, the Existing One has ordered that we do everything we just did today. Stay at the meeting tent entrance for seven days and follow the Existing One’s instructions so that you don't die.” So Aaron and his sons followed the Existing One’s instructions that were given to Moses.
