Leviticus 9

Priests’ ordination is complete; Moses says God will appear

On the eighth day Moses called Aaron, his sons, and Israel’s elders. Then he told Aaron,

“Take a male calf as your sin offering and a ram for your burnt offering (both in perfect condition) and offer them before the Existing One. Tell the Israelites to bring a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb (both a year old in perfect condition) for a burnt offering, an ox and a ram for peace offerings, and grain mixed with oil all to sacrifice before the Existing One because he will appear to you today.”

Aaron offers the sacrifices

So they brought everything to the meeting tent like Moses had asked, and the whole assembly gathered around and stood before the Existing One. Moses told Aaron,

“Come close to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, making amends for yourself and the people. Bring the people’s offering and make amends for them, just like the Existing One has ordered.”

So Aaron approached the altar and killed the calf which was the sin offering for himself. Aaron’s sons presented the blood to him, so he dipped his finger in it, wiped it on the altar’s horns, and then poured out the rest at the altar’s base. He burned the fat, the kidneys, and the liver from the sin offering on the altar just like the Existing One had instructed Moses. He burned the rest of the carcass and its skin outside the camp.

Then he killed the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he threw it against the sides of the altar. They handed the burnt offering to him piece by piece (including the head), and he burned them on the altar. He washed the guts and legs and burned them with the burnt offering on the altar.

Then he presented the people’s offering. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and killed it, offering it like the first one. He also offered the burnt offering following its procedures. He presented the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar next to the burnt offering that was given for that morning.

Then he killed the ox and the ram as the people’s peace offerings. Aaron’s sons handed him the blood, and he threw it against the sides of the altar. They took the fat pieces from the ox and ram (including the tail, gut fat, kidneys, and liver) and put them on the breasts and burned them on the altar. But Aaron waved the breasts and right thigh as a wave offering before the Existing One like Moses instructed.

God’s supernatural fire burns the sacrifices

Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them. He came down from offering the sin offering, burnt offering, and peace offering. Moses and Aaron went into the meeting tent, and when they came out they blessed the people and the Existing One’s glory appeared to all of them. Fire came out from in front of the Existing One and consumed the burnt offering and fat pieces on the altar. When everyone saw this, they all shouted and fell on their faces.
