Leviticus 1

Burnt offerings

The Existing One's voice came from the meeting tent and called Moses, saying,

“Relay this message to the Israelites:

‘Whenever any of you brings an offering to me, it must either be a cow, a goat, a sheep, or a bird.

If the animal is a cow:

  • It needs to be a male bull without any defects.

  • The person offering the cow needs to bring it to the entrance of the meeting tent so I can accept him.

  • He needs to lay his hand on the cow’s head, and then it will be accepted as compensation for his offenses.

  • Then he needs to kill it in front of me, and the priests (Aaron's descendants) will need to throw its blood against the sides of the altar at the entrance of the meeting tent.

  • Then he needs to cut the burnt offering into pieces, and the priests need to put wood on the altar and light it on fire. Then the priests need to arrange the pieces, the head, and the fat on the wood, but the animal’s organs and legs should be rinsed off with water. The priest will then burn all of it on the altar as a fragrant food offering to me.

If the animal is a goat or sheep:

  • It needs to be a male without any defects, and the person offering it needs to kill it on the north side of the altar in front of me.

  • The priests will then throw its blood against the sides of the altar. The person offering the animal will cut it into pieces, with its head and its fat, and the priest will arrange them on the burning altar. The guts and legs should be rinsed off with water. Then the priest will offer all of it and burn it on the altar as a fragrant food offering to me.

If the animal is a bird:

  • It needs to either be a turtledove or a pigeon.

  • The priest must bring it to the altar and wring off its head and burn it on the altar. Then its blood will need to be drained out on the side of the altar.

  • He will remove its food pouch with its contents and throw them with the ashes on the east side of the altar. He will then tear the bird open by its wings careful not to sever it completely. Then the priest will burn it on the altar on top of the wood. It will be a fragrant food offering to the Existing One.
