1 Chronicles 26

The gatekeepers for the Existing One's house

This is how the gatekeepers were grouped:

  • the Korahites

  • Meshelemiah (Kore's son)

  • Asaph's descendants.

Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah, Jediael, Zebadiah, Jathniel, Elam, Jehohanan, Eliehoenai.

God blessed Obed-edom with many sons: Shemaiah, Jehozabad, Joah, Sachar, Nethanel, Ammiel, Issachar, Peullethai. His son Shemaiah had sons who were rulers and patriarchs with great ability. Shemaiah's sons were: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad whose brothers were Elihu and Semachiah. All together, Obed-edom's family had 62 men able for service.

Meshelemiah had 18 sons and brothers who were able for service.

Hosah (Merari's descendant) had sons: Shimri (who was chief even though he wasn't the firstborn), Hilkiah, Tebaliah, and Zechariah. All together, Hosah had 13 sons and brothers.

These groups of gatekeepers each had a chief and each had responsibilities to the Existing One's house. They were assigned to their gates by casting lots:

  • East: Shelemiah

  • North: Zechariah (who was a shrewd counselor)

  • South: Obed-edom. His sons were assigned to the gatehouse

  • West: Shuppim and Hosah, taking the Shallecheth gate on the road that goes up.

Each gate had its own watch schedule:

  • East: 6 each day

  • North: 4 each day

  • South: 4 each day, plus 2 at the gatehouse

  • West: 4 at the road, and 2 at the colonnade

That's how the Korahites and Merari's descendants were grouped as gatekeepers.

The treasurers for the Existing One's House

Ahijah the Levite was the treasurer for God's house and the dedicated gifts. The other treasurers were the descendants of Jehieli (leader of Gershonite clan of Ladan's descendants), Zetham, and his brother Joel.

These are the leaders that descended from Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel:

The chief treasurer was Shebuel (Gershom's son and Moses's grandson). His lineage was carried through Eliezer who fathered Rehabiah, who fathered Jeshaiah, who fathered Joram, who fathered Zichri, who fathered Shelomoth. Shelomoth and his brothers were in charge of the treasuries and the gifts that were dedicated by King David, the patriarchs, and the army commanders. They gave gifts to the Existing One's house from the spoil they won in battles. They also oversaw the gifts that were given by Samuel the seer, Saul (Kish's son), Abner (Ner's son), and Joab (Zeruiah's son).

From the Izharites, Chenaniah and his descendants were appointed as officers and judges to handle Israel's international responsibilities. From the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his descendants (1,700 men) oversaw Israel west of the Jordan for the Existing One and the king. From the Hebronites, Jerijah was in charge of the genealogies. (In the 40th year of David's reign, they searched for talented men and found them at Jazer in Gilead.) King David appointed him and his brothers (2,700 talented men) as leaders to oversee the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites on behalf of God and the king.
