Christian Symbolism in Marvel’s Avengers Films

⚠️ ALERT: Spoilers Ahead!

If you’re familiar with Marvel’s Avengers series, you’ll know that Thanos is the villain who wipes out half the universe’s population. He’s the bringer of death, and his key line in the movies is, “I am inevitable.”

His name, “Thanos,” seems to come from the Greek word “thanatos,” which means “death.” His quote, “I am inevitable” is the perfect saying for a character who represents death, because everyone who ever lives will inevitably have to meet death at some point.

In Avengers: Infinity War Thanos actually succeeded in killing half the universe, (including superheroes!) This represents how death actually succeeded in killing Jesus. But in the following movie, Avengers: Endgame, the surviving superheroes pull some strings to undo the death that Thanos forced upon the universe. That represents the way that Jesus pulled reversed death and came back to life, offering spiritual life to the rest of the universe.
