Psalm 44 (Rhyming)

(1) God Gave Us Our Land

God, by our forefathers we were told

Of everything You did in days of old.

You drove out nations with Your hand,

And planted Israel in a new land.

You gave our foes affliction and pain,

And then sprinkled us throughout their terrain.

It wasn’t by skill that we claimed that land;

We weren’t victorious by our own hand.

We got this land ‘cause of You and Your light,

Because we were favored in Your sight.

(4) God gets the Credit

God, You are the King who’s over me,

Please lead Jacob [Israel] to victory.

You will push back our enemies who oppose,

Your fame will be how we trample our foes.

My bow won’t be the thing I rely upon,

Victory won’t come just ‘cause my sword’s drawn.

You let us conquer those who oppose,

You brought disgrace to our hateful foes.

We brag about God all our days,

We thank You forever and always.

(9) Now God Abandoned Us

But now You reject us—a humiliating blow;

And where our armies march, You no longer go.

You spun us around with our backs exposed,

And we’re being looted by our hateful foes.

Like fresh meat, You handed us out,

You scattered us far, across lands throughout.

You sell Your people for a price so low,

A deal with no profits to show.

You made us a joke to neighbors nearby,

A laughingstock in everyone’s eye.

To other nations, we’re a meme ‘cause of You,

They just shake their heads when we’re in view.

All day long, my shame stares me in the face,

And now I’m completely covered with disgrace.

Being taunted, I’m filled with humiliation,

I’ve been defied by my foe’s retaliation.

(17) We Stayed Faithful to God

But even in hardship we remember You,

To Your alliance, we have stayed true.

Our hearts haven’t turned back,

Our steps didn’t veer from Your track.

You broke us in the dragon’s domain,

And cloaked us in shadow, where we now remain.

(20) Save Us, God

We didn’t forget God’s reputation,

Or give foreign gods our adoration.

He would have found out if we did,

He knows the secrets our hearts have hid.

We’re being killed all day for Your sake.

Like livestock about to become steak.

God, why do You sleep? You must awaken!

Please don’t leave us, forever forsaken.

Why do You hide Your face away,

Forgetting about our pain and dismay?

Down into the dust, our souls now go;

Our bodies now cling to the dirt below.

Stand up and be our aid,

Save us so Your love’s displayed.
