1 Chronicles 12
Mighty warriors leave Saul to support David
These are the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was avoiding Saul (Kish's son). They also were his mighty warriors who helped him in war. They were archers who could shoot arrows and sling stones with either their right or left hands. They were Benjaminites, Saul's kinsmen.
The leader was Ahiezer, then Joash (both sons of Shemaah from Gibeah)
Jeziel and Pelet (Azmaveth's sons)
Beracah
Jehu (from Anathoth)
Ishmaiah (from Gibeon, the leader of the thirty)
Jeremiah
Jahaziel
Johanan
Jozbad (from Gederah)
Eluzai
Jerimoth
Bealiah
Shemariah
Shephatiah (the Haruphite)
Elkanah
Isshiah
Azarel
Joezer
Jashobeam
the Korahites
Joelah & Zebadiah (sons of Jeroham from Gedor)
Mighty warriors from the Gadites went to David at the stronghold in the wilderness. They were experts with shields and spears, and their faces looked like lions who struck as swiftly as gazelles. They were:
Ezer (the leader)
Obadiah
Eliab
Mishmannah
Jeremiah
Attai
Eliel
Johanan
Elzabad
Jeremigh
Machbannai
They were Gadites who commanded the army, and even the weakest of them could defeat 100 men, and the strongest, 1000. These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing and scattered everyone living in the valleys, east and west.
When some of the men from Benjamin and Judah came to David's stronghold, David went out to meet them and said, "If you come to help, then my heart will join with yours, but if you betray me to my enemies even though I'm innocent, then let the God of our ancestors see and reprimand you." Then the Spirit enveloped Amazai (the leader of the thirty) and he said,
"We are yours, David. We're with you, son of Jesse! May peace come upon you and your helpers, because your God helps you."
Then David took them in and made them officers of his troops.
Some of Manasseh's men joined David's side when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he didn't help them, since the Philistine rulers decided to send him away, saying "At our expense, he will try to rejoin with his king, Saul.") As he went to Ziklag, Manasseh's men joined him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, leaders of thousands in Manasseh. They helped David fight the band of raiders since they were all mighty and courageous warriors and commanders in the army. From day to day, new men came to help David until there was a sizable army, as if it was God's.
These are the numbers of the armed troops who came to Hebron to help David take Saul's kingdom, just like the Existing One's message had said.
6,800 from Judah
7,100 Simeonites
4,600 Levites
3,700 from Jehoiada (Aaron's lineage) including their prince
23 commanders from Zadok's house (including Zadok)
3,000 Benjaminites (Saul's Kinsmen who had mostly stayed allegiant to Saul until that point)
20,800 Ephraimites
18,000 from the half-tribe of Manasseh
200 wise leaders from Issachar plus everyone under their command
50,000 seasoned troops from Zebulun focused on helping David
38,000 warriors from Naphtali (including 1,000 commanders)
28,600 Danites equipped for battle
40,000 seasoned troops from Asher
120,000 of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh from the other side of the Jordan
Ready for battle, all these warriors came to Hebron fully intent on making David king over all of Israel. Similarly, the rest of Israel was fully ready to make David king. They stayed there with David for three days, eating and drinking the food their brothers had prepared for them. Also, their relatives from as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen: abounding amounts of flour, fig cakes, raisins, wine, oil, ox meat, and sheep meat, because Israel was full of joy.
