Sin = Inconsistency with Life
Sin is often thought of as “breaking God’s rules,” but I’ve come to realize it’s so much deeper than that.
Scripture describes GOD as a life-producing machine, while it describes SIN as a death-producing machine. God radiates life wherever He goes, while sin spews death wherever it goes. As everyone knows, “life” and “death” are opposing forces that are pitted against each other.
You can picture “God & life” on one end of the scale, with “sin & death” on the opposite end. If I move TOWARDS one end of the scale, then that means I’m simultaneously moving AWAY from the other. When I sin, I’m moving away from God and away from Life.
This opposition between “God” and “sin” gives me a new way of defining “sin”:
sin = inconsistency with God/Life
When I sin, I’m not just breaking some random set of rules that God made up—I’m moving in the opposite direction of Life itself. The reason why stealing is a sin isn’t just because God said so, but because stealing is inconsistent with Spiritual Life. Stealing makes your spirit feels colder, darker, and sadder, because it fosters spiritual death. But being generous makes you feel warmer, brighter, and happier, because it fosters spiritual life.
The Hebrew word for “sin” is “hata” which can mean “missing the mark” or “wandering from the path.” Both of these definitions affirm the idea of moving the wrong direction: away from God and away from infinite life.
Conclusion
When we sin, we’re not just breaking a random set of rules—we’re defying the very essence of LIFE ITSELF. God wants us to enjoy spiritual life with Him rather than endure spiritual death with sin.
