God’s Reality vs Our Reality

God Saw Abram as Abraham

In Genesis 17 God tells Abram:

“Your name won’t be Abram anymore [which means ‘exalted father.’] From now on, your name will be Abraham [which means ‘father of a multitude’], because I have made you the father of a multitude of countries.”

—Genesis 17:5 (Simple Bible)

When God renamed Abram to Abraham, Abraham only had one kid. Yet at that time God spoke in the past tense, saying, “I have made you the patriarch of a multitude.” God said it like it had already been accomplished even though Abraham only had one offspring at that time.

From the human perspective, Abraham appeared to be an exalted father of one child, but from God’s perspective, he was the father of a multitude.

Humanity saw one reality as true, but God saw a different reality as true.

Our Circumstances Might Look Different from God’s Truth

Maybe there are situations in our lives today when our circumstances look different than God’s truth.

For example:

  • I might feel like a mortal when I’ll actually live forever.

  • I might feel like I’m alone, when God is actually with me.

  • I might feel like I’m stuck in sin when God’s Word tells me that I’m actually more than a conqueror.

In The Normal Christian Life, Watchman Nee says:

“If God’s word is truth then everything else must be a lie. Everything else will eventually have to yield to God‘s truth.” [Paraphrased]

If what God says is true, then we should bank on his words no matter what our circumstances look like.

Nee also says:

“We must believe God no matter how convincing Satan‘s arguments appear.” [Paraphrased]

Maybe that’s why the Bible tells us to “walk by faith—not by appearance.”
