Esther 6

King remembers Mordecai

The king couldn’t sleep that night, so he had someone read him the history book. He came across the part that told how Mordecai warned about Bigthana and Teresh (the king’s two castrated guards who tried to kill the king). King Ahasuerus asked, “What did we do to honor Mordecai for this?” The king’s young men answered, “We didn’t do anything for him.”

King has Haman honor Mordecai

Then Haman entered the palace’s outer courtyard to talk about hanging Mordecai, so the king asked “Who is that in the courtyard?” The king’s young men informed him, “It’s Haman,” so the king said, “Let him come in.” So Haman entered and the king asked, “What should be done to the man who the king wants to honor?” Haman asked himself “Who would the king want to honor more than me?” And Haman said out loud, “You should buy him royal clothes like your own, give him one of your royal horses, and set a crown on his head. Have one of your most noble officials dress the man and have them lead him on the horse through the city square, proclaiming: ‘This is the man the king proudly wishes to honor!’” Then the king told Haman, “Quick, take the robes and horse just like you said and do so to Mordecai the Jew who sits at the king’s gate. Be sure to do everything exactly as you had mentioned.” So Haman took the robes and the horse, and did exactly that.

Haman humiliated

Then Mordecai returned to king’s gate, while Haman hurried back to his house crying and covering his face. Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his advisors and wife told him, “If Mordecai is a Jew and you’ve already started falling beneath him, then you’ll never be able to surpass him; you’ll keep falling lower beneath him.”

While they were still talking with him, the king’s castrated guards arrived to bring Haman to the feast that Esther had prepared.
