1 Chronicles 9
So all of Israel's genealogies were recorded in the Book of Israel's Kings. Judah was taken into Babylonian captivity for violating their faith. The first to return to Israelite cities were the priests, the Levites, and the temple staff. Some of the people from Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem:
Uthai (son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from Judah's son Perez)
Shilonites (Asaiah the firstborn and his sons)
Zerah's offspring: Jeuel and 690 of their kinsmen)
Benjaminites: Sallu (the son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah), Ibneiah (son of Jeroham), Elah (son of Uzzi, son of Michri), and Meshullam (son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah) and 956 of their kinsmen.
Priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, Azariah (son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of God's house), and Adaiah (son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah), Maaasai (son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer) and 1,760 of their kinsmen
Levites: Shemaiah (son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, from Merari), Bakbakkar, Heresh, Balal, Mattaniah (son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph), Obadiah (son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun), Berechiah (son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the Netophathite villages)
The gatekeepers were Shallum (their chief), Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their kinsmen. Until then, they watched the king's gate on the east side for the Levite camps. Shallum (son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah) and his kinsmen (the Korahites) were in charge of guarding the entrances, just like their ancestors who had been in charge of guarding the entrances in the Existing One's camp. And Phinehas (Eleazar's son) used to be their chief officer; the Existing One was with him. Zechariah (Meshelemiah's son) was gatekeeper for the meeting tent's entrance. There were 212 gatekeepers in total, and they were enrolled by genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer appointed them to their positions of trust. They were in charge of guarding the entrances of the Existing One's house. The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north, and south. Their kinsmen in the villages were obligated to join them every seven days since the four chief gatekeepers (who were Levites) were entrusted to oversee the vaults and valuables of the Existing One's house. They lived near God's house since it was their responsibility to watch over it an open it every morning.
Some of them were responsible for the utensils used in service, and they were required to count them whenever they were taken out or brought back in. Others were responsible for the furniture, the holy utensils, the fine flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices. Others (the priests' sons) were in charge of mixing the spices. Mattithiah (a Levite, firstborn of Shallum the Korahite) was entrusted with making the flat cakes. Some of their kinsmen (the Kohathites) were in charge of preparing the showbread every Sabbath.
The singers stayed in the temple rooms and had no other responsibilities because they were on duty day and night. They were the Levite patriarchs, leaders of their own generations, and they lived in Jerusalem.
[After stating the above, the text describes Saul’s genealogy again]
