Why is Hell Eternal if Our Sins are Finite?
How is it just for God to punish 90 years of sin with an eternity of hellfire and torment? Why is hell infinite if our sins are finite?
God = Eternal Life
When people think of “eternal life” they usually think of “heaven,” and they think of it as something God uses to “reward” people for jumping through his hoops.
That way of viewing eternal life couldn’t be more wrong.
Scripture says that God IS eternal life. It’s not a possession that God keeps in his pocket, but rather it’s something that he IS. Eternal life is a part of God’s identity.
Here are some verses to support this claim:
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. —John 14:6 (ESV)
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. —John 11:25–26
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. —John 6:35 (ESV)
We are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. — 1 John 5:20
Rejecting God = Rejecting Eternal Life
Because eternal life is a part of God’s identity, then what happens when I reject God?
When I reject God, I am also rejecting eternal life, which can only be found in him.
If I reject Eternal Life, the only thing I’m left with is eternal death
If the human soul really is eternal, and it rejects the Only One Who Is Eternal Life, then what will it be left with?
When an eternal being rejects eternal life, the only logical outcome it could possibly experience would be eternal death.
