Is Human Nature Actually Sinful?
In Squid Game, one character who outspokenly hates God selflessly gives up her life so that another contestant can have a shot at winning the prize money. In this act ultimate goodness, the writers of the show seem to be making a commentary on Christianity: Is human nature actually selfish like Christianity says?
If human nature really is selfish, then why are human beings capable of such brilliant acts of love, selflessness, and benevolence?
Designed to be Good
The Christian origin story teaches that humanity was created “in God’s image.” While that phrase is open to interpretation, it suggests that human beings were designed to have similarities with God. One of those similarities seems to be the ability to do things that are compassionate, selfless, and altruistic. Those qualities reflect God’s character, and that’s what we were created to be like.
Any goodness visible in humanity provides a glimpse into the way God originally intended us to be.
Afflicted by Corruption
While human beings are capable of doing selfless things, the Christian origin story also teaches that early humans chose to do things their own way instead of God’s way. When they chose to turn from God, they simultaneously turned from goodness. Sadly, their choice has left a lasting impact on humanity, which is why we now have a nature to put ourselves first (over God, and over others).
Ready for Restoration
Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there.
Instead of abandoning us to corruption, God made a way to let His spirit live inside of us so He can transform us back into the “fully good” beings He intended us to be.
